I Finally Meet My Grandson

On January 20th my son and I traveled to New Jersey so that I could finally meet Declan Bryant Malone-Caldwell!! I cried when I met him and when I left him.

Finally we meet and he didn't cry but Nana did!

Finally we meet and he didn’t cry but Nana did!

I was so shocked at how big he was and what a beautiful little boy.  He weighs 14 pounds and 12 ounces, he is rarely still unless he’s sleeping and when he talks to us he sounds so serious!!!  I hope you enjoy the pictures I’ve attached of this wonderful little guy that was born almost three months too soon and weighed only two pounds and two ounces in July 2016.

We had a wonderful three days with him and I can’t wait to go for another visit but it truly breaks my heart to leave him.  He is a very happy little boy and his mom said that when he has the final surgery she will feel better traveling any distance with him.  She said she would bring him to the farm when she feels she can safely travel any distance away from his neonatal doctors and his regular physicians.

Trip to Eastern Shore – Stockton MD

Last year my daughter, Heather, and I started our 1st Annual Girls Trip but this year Heather’s trip was a week before mine and that was good so Dad wouldn’t worry about both of us on different roads at the same time but it did spread the worry out a tad but we both made it just fine.

On September 23rd, I went on my very first long distance trip alone to visit Margaret who lives in Maryland. Margaret has been my best friend for more years than we can count and started sometime in the teenage years of my children.  We have so many like interests and have each other in tears catching up on our daily lives.  You have to know we “talk” almost daily by email but it’s just not the same as being in person.  I almost lost her last year and had to go to her to reassure myself that my friend is working really hard to stay in this mad world to keep me sane and out of trouble.  I love her to death!!

She lives in Stockton Maryland which is 408 miles from my home and about 7 1/2 hours including potty breaks along the way.  To get to her I crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge which was awesome, astounding, long, and surrounded by water!!!

This is as close as I wanted to get to the side of the bridge!! :)

I get seasick quite easily and there had been a week of storms prior to my going to see her and the water was very high and choppy and I could feel an uneasy feeling coming so I made myself have tunnel vision to make it across and back without throwing up my innards!!  That I must say was the only bad part of the trip.

While there she took me to a place called “Furnace Town”  and if you are ever over there you must go to this little town museum!  Margaret used to make costumes for their annual events.  It was set up as a self walking tour or you could get someone to go with you to explain what you were seeing.

We met a very educated gentleman that was the tender of the gardens and he told us so much about the heirloom garden he tended himself and then took us into the school-house which was awesome.  After that we took the tour on our own and it was definitely like walking back into another era.  The Furnace Town church on the property was absolutely gorgeous. What a spot for a wedding and they were setting up for an evening wedding at the site the day we were there.

While there I bought a wonderful book called “The Weaver’s Girl” by Gracie Ayers which is based on this town.  Great read!!

While in Stockton, we also went shopping at all (some) of her favorites spots which are now mine!!   We ate out, drove to the waterways that are close to her home.

We got caught up on most everything in four days, laughed, cried, watched “chick flicks”,  considered the problems of the world and what we think needs to be done to fix it (HA) and had a most awesome visit.  Then I had to come home but we promised to get together again next year either at her place or someplace in between with Heather and Ashley!

1st Annual Girl Trip

This post is a little late but so worth writing!!  My daughter and I took our first annual girls trip this year and  I so hope we continue to do from now on.  We met up with our best friends forever in Norfolk, Virginia, where our Ashley lives and my best friend forever, Margaret met us at Ashley’s home for a long weekend in October.  We had a blast!!

We lazed around in Ashley’s beautiful home in a historic district, we shopped, we toured some historic areas of Norfolk, we ate (no gorged) on wonderful food and laughed until we cried!

Ashley is a childhood friend of my daughter’s that just re-connected this summer and Margaret is my best friend in the whole wide world.  We’ve been through a lot together and she’s always there for me.

Here are a few of the pictures we took while on our 1st Annual Girls Trip.

We visited the Virginia Living Museum while there and it’s home to more than 250 species of animals found in Virginia including reptiles, mammals, birds and fish. They provide a sanctuary for orphaned, non-releasable or injured animals.

I can’t remember exactly what this part was but it was gorgeous stone work.

We talked and laughed so much that I forgot to take a lot of pictures but believe me it was a wonderful trip!

We all cried when we parted but promised to make it a regular visit and our hostess was the “mostess”!!  She introduced us to a lovely new friend Sally Haynes who joined us along with Ashley at the farm for Thanksgiving.

It was such a wonderful trip for me and my daughter to spend special time together and to be with such special friends.  I’m really looking forward to next years 2nd Annual Girl Trip!!!

Yoohoo, spring, where are you?

Our little neck of the woods has been filled with major low temps for the last six weeks with minor warm ups and like everyone else I am SOOOOOOO ready for spring.  Yes, this is another post about the weather and knowing we can’t do anything about but gripe I think we are all doing that quite well!!

We were just hit with our first major snowfall which started around 2:30 on Wednesday evening causing me to leave work early so I wouldn’t be stuck out on the roads with my family worried to death.  NO I’m not stupid enough to wait for the roads to get treacherous before heading home.  I have a wonderful job and supervisors that allow me to head out early since I live about 25 minutes from home which is very much in the country.  We had plenty of warning about the incoming storm and prepared well in advance.  By the time I pulled into our driveway the roads were getting white and the mountain in front of our house and the one behind our house could not be seen.

Just got home!

This is what it looked like about 20 minutes after I arrived home.

Hubby had worked most of the day before feeding the animals heavy and cutting some extra firewood for the main stove and the one in the kitchen.  It’s a good thing he covered it as soon as he unloaded it.  We had prepared for the electricity to go out as well and had five gallon buckets full of water for the bathroom, pitchers full for drinking and cooking and gallon jugs full for the animals and washing dishes.  Thankfully the power only went out twice and it was during the night and only long enough to have to reset the clocks.  Here’s a pictorial of how the storm grew as the night went on:

We’ve muddled through with no major crisis and hubby has to start over this morning cleaning out the drifts to all the animals to feed.  I’m keeping the fires going and cooking.  Today is a good day for a pot of homemade venison/vegetable soup!!

Best Friend Visit

Have you ever sat with someone and you laughed so hard your face hurt? Have you got a special person in your life besides the love of your life that you can talk to about ANYTHING? Have you got a special friend that can make you laugh, think, cry, and listen to for hours on end? I do!!
My best friend (besides  hubby) came for a 10 day visit this month and we had an absolute ball!! We talked, laughed, shopped, crafted, cleaned, decorated, ate, drank, laughed, talked, and slept a little while she was with me. My husband took us to the West Virginia State Fair one evening. We shopped three or four days. We put almost 700 miles on my car. We caught up on old stuff and new stuff. We visited the mountain where her husband now resides. We sampled new wines and old.  We went on treasure hunts. We baked! We sobbed when she left to go home and we’re making plans for our next visit together!! Margaret is my MVBF!!!
