The Woodhouse

Our woodhouse is a 24′ x 24′ and about 30 feet high. We fill it every spring when the weather cooperates with dead wood that we find on the farm. Most all of it is from dead oak, ash, walnut or locust trees and we try to keep it under roof so that we have no reason to have flu fires during the winter.

This is what we had left over from 2019 winter.

First thing in the spring we start checking fences for downed trees on them. Those trees are blocked up and then cut for firewood.

This is one such tree.

This summer and fall a very good friend of ours came and cut trees that had fallen onto the pasture. Most of it was still on a stump so it will dry through this fall and winter as we use up the drier wood.

This is the wood he brought in and helped Eddie split. It’s now sitting on a heavy tarp and covered with another one.

Our daughter and son-in-law also brought us a huge pile of slabs and it’s in the woodhouse ready to use.

The slabs don’t hold a fire overnight but they’re great for the middle of the day to keep the fires going.

The woodhouse is full and we have a good start on the supply for winter 2021.

I know we’ll be warm and cozy all winter!!

Visitors from across the world

In the spring I met a very precious new friend that works down the hall from my office and she’s from China and working on her PhD at Virginia Tech.  She misses her family in China (husband, father and mother) very much and has her daughter with her.  I love learning about her country and lifestyle and she mine.  I recently invited Janet, her daughter and some of her close friends over to the farm.  It was such a treat to share our life with them and be able to actually show her things we do on the farm.  The following is a picture album of our day.

We showed them how we bring in and process our own firewood.

Janet and her daughter plan to come back with their friends to a weekend campout at the pond one more time before they all return to China in late July and August.

I am so blessed to have friends all over the world.  I’m hoping they enjoyed the trip as much as we did.

They also brought us a charm of peace which I will keep at my home’s entrance as long as it lasts.  Peace charm

Thank you all so much for your charm, lessons of life and friendship!!  I’ll never forget you!

New Book Club

Eight ladies that I work with have become members of a newly organized book club about a two months ago and we will have our second meeting the second week of May.  I’ll be expanding friendship with some of the girls, getting to know some ladies that I’ve met but don’t know well, and meeting ladies I don’t know but hope to add to my friends group.

When we first met we each were to bring a list of books that we would like to read.  Those books were put on slips of paper, folded and put in a hat to draw the name of the first book to read.  The first book in my opinion was fantastic and the name of it is “Love Lies Bleeding” by Jess McConkey.  I highly recommend it for all women!!  It has a great story line, not too many characters and a strong woman as the main character.

I’ll blog each month about the books we read and hope it’ll give you some choices for your reading enjoyment.  My list of books to read is constantly growing as you can tell if you hook up to the “GoodReads” link on my blog page.  I love to read and have a very hard time finding the time to do it.

Good friends

I have several very good friends that mean so much to me. Some are my age, some younger and some older but we all have common interests.

Tonight I want to talk about my friend Holly. She has such a giving heart, she’s a little bit “hippy”, she’s very intelligent, she gives of her time without question and she’s my friend!! We can go for two or three months without talking on the telephone or seeing each other but we always know we’re there for each other all the time. When things bother us to the point of making us nutty, sleepless, unwired, and all those other adjectives that only friends understand, we’re there for each other. Holly, I love you and so enjoyed our visit on Sunday! Forget about the cat!! 😉
